Our 2018 Visit to NAMM: Instrument Rentals, Kala Ukuleles, Performance Looping
We had the privilege of attending the NAMM show again this year! There were so many great seminars we listened to, new products we got to check out, and made plenty of new friends!
For those of you who don’t know what the NAMM show is, it’s a large-scale event designed to showcase the latest innovations in music products, sound and lighting, and recording technology in order to promote the art of music making and strengthen the music product industry. NAMM also hosts seminars and talks catered to musicians music merchants to teach about the latest techniques in marketing, recording, production, and more!
One of the best seminars we attended for performance artists was about looping, hosted by musician Tiffany Christopher. Looping is a type of music that has been made increasingly popular by artists such as Ed Sheeran and KT Tunstall. It allows musicians to record small pieces of music and then play it back live while playing something else on top of it. There’s no need for a full band when you have a loop pedal! This demonstration seminar from Tiffany was both entertaining and educational, giving valuable information through her performing live examples of using a loop pedal. You can check out more about Tiffany Christopher and her use of looping here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mgy-lg4gcF8
We also got to see the latest releases from our Ukulele vendor Kala. The Ukulele starter kits we sell each year for our summer group class are evolving! They still offer the Makala kit and Kala-S Uke with tuner and tuning app, but will soon be releasing even more models and colors with the start up kit. If you haven’t purchased one of our startup kits before or you want to expand your instrument library, we will keep you informed when these ukes are fresh on the market. There is also a new starter uke for young beginners, Color Chord. This uke comes in all black with colored indicators to show exactly where to place your fingers for different chords. This is great for self learners, and for young beginners that don’t always have a teacher around to help them find their placement. Along with all starter kits comes full access to the Kala App. They have been developing this app all year with instructional how to videos on countless songs. If you already purchased a starter uke, you can access this app for free! Check out kalabrand.com for all the latest in ukulele products and accessories and if you are a student with us we pass along our dealer savings on any purchase. Contact us direct to order!
One of our most important meetings at NAMM this year was to help launch our instrumental rental program! We will begin rentals on all band and string instruments in June this year. What is most exciting about offering this to our Music Abode family is the affordability, convenience of ordering online, pick up and repair, exchange or purchase at our studio in Santa Ana (right next to John Wayne Airport). With most of our private students also playing instruments in school, I have experienced direct feedback on how renting can sometimes be a waste of money and inconvenient. Without disclosing too much information before our program launch date, we are able to offer quality rentals at an affordable price and rental fees going toward an also discounted purchase so fees aren’t wasted. Also, ordering and repairs are simple. We are so excited for what is to come this year!
All in all, NAMM was a big highlight of our year and we can’t wait for next year!
