Teacher Feature: Piano Instructor Tony Blackwell
One of the most impressive facts I learned upon meeting Tony, and also probably what makes him such a great instructor, is that prior to obtaining his Bachelors Degree in Music from the University of Southhampton, he was self taught on piano. Tony came to teach with The Music Abode after most recently working for the international ABBA tribute, ‘ABBAMAX’ on lead guitar and vocals aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. It was there he met his wife also a vocalist and performer and relocated to the US. Prior to his latest tour he also performed on Princess Cruise Lines with the international party band “Vitalized”, where he was the Keyboardist, Bassist, Vocalist and occasional drummer. He also briefly worked for Thomas Cook as a solo entertainer in Turkey.
At the University of Southhampton, Tony studied music recording, production and composition. Tony earned himself the highest grade for a self-produced album of original material in his final year, not only composing, performing, recording and mixing the album but also performing every track himself.
Using his composition skills, Tony also enjoys creating music arrangements for his students to personalize their learning experience. From being self taught on piano, to performing internationally, this exemplifies Tony’s ability to teach all genres of music and inspire students with many different interests and learning curves.
“When learning any instrument, I think the most important factors are that you have fun learning, and that you have a goal. Like anything we do, if you enjoy it, you want to get better and you want to improve. Having fun and having goals, will keep you wanting to play, as you start achieving and surpassing them.”
